Code on toolbar!!

I bought a eurovox from a friend last year and it has always worked fine. My friend comes round and updates it every few months when I lose my channels but my friend has now moved away so I'm left to fend for myself. I have no idea how to update it and have heard you need to obtain a code?? Totally clueless. Anyone have any idea what this means, where to find the codes and how to enter them?
